In 1975, when Sunset celebrated its 50th Anniversary, there was a kick-off rally, attended by numerous distinguished Sunset Alumni in September 1974. At the conclusion of the program, the Bisonettes lined the hallways and outside steps, and everyone assembled at the west front of the school building. A hole had been dug and a large oak tree, donated by Sunset Alumni was placed into the ground by the late former Bison football greats Jerry Mays and Don "Tiny" Goss. A plaque was placed in front of the tree by the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce noting the American Revolution bi-centennial of the United States and the 50 years of Sunset High School. Principal Harold Filgo accepted the tree as a lasting tribute to the strength of Sunset High School. The tree still stands today. |
