In 1933, the Sundial staff created The Sunset Hall of Fame for the purpose of recognizing· Sunset Bison who became nationally famous during their years at Sunset but also beyond their Sunset years. . In 1975, the Editor of “The Sundial” wrote, “ After looking back over the 50 years of Sunset history, the Sundial staff of 1975 has found that a number of Sunset graduates have distinguished themselves on a national level and are worthy of being recognized for their accomplishments after graduation.”
In 2012, a Sunset Alumni Committee was established to select 12 outstanding Bison from throughout the History of Sunset to stand with 12 Selected from each of the other five original DISD High Schools, Crozier Tech, W.H. Adamson, Forest Avenue, North Dallas and Woodrow Wilson, as “Sanger Trophy Honorees.” The Sanger Trophy had been presented each year by the Dallas department store to the school that had the most overall sports championships that year. Eventually, Sanger Brothers presented the Trophy to Sunset for permanent possession as the Overall Sports Champion.
However, during reconstruction at the School, the Trophy was lost. When found, it had been damaged, but Bison Don Martin, Class of ‘52, with help from the other five Schools, restored the Trophy and following a Re-Dedication of the Trophy, attended by the Honorees from each of the six Schools. The refurbished Sanger Trophy is now on display at the Old Red Museum of History in Downtown Dallas.
Then--Sunset Principal, the late Anthony Tovar expressed his disappointment in 2012, that there had not been any additions to the Sunset Hall of Fame since 1975, and indicated that he planned to Induct the 12 “Sanger Trophy Honorees” into the Hall. Unfortunately, that never transpired, but now Principal Tovar's plan is completed as this group becomes the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2012.*
Now--Each year the alumni board will accept nominations for the current year HOF awards. Process and more information to follow.
*Note – There were three selected as “Sanger Trophy Honorees” who had previously been named to the original Sunset Hall of Fame – Linda Darnell, Dr. Lee H. Smith and Eddie Southern.
